the whole project took over a year, but it demonstrates how a printed book can achieve things never possible on an e reader device. after being shot down by almost every printer, belgium’s die keure agreed to make the book using a different die-cut pattern on every page. My example is Jonathan Safran Foer’s Tree of Codes (2010), in which the textual treatment is executed in a concrete fashion by actually cutting words out of Bruno Schulz’s short story. The cut-out begins from the very title of the novel if you take The Street of Crocodiles and cut out certain letters, you can spell out Tree of Codes, the title of Foer’s book. the book was designed by sara de bondt studio, published by visual editions and features cover artwork by gra圓18. This is a die-cut book by erasure, taken from Bruno Schulz’s original The Street of Crocodiles and cut into ribbons to create a new narrative. the text inside the book is taken from the street of crocodiles by bruno schulz and given a new interpretation through the unusual printing technique.

the book appears quite average on the exterior, but once you flip it open each page is precisely die cut to have only a few words exposed.
